 Why do we race motocross?
« Thread Started on Mar 10, 2008, 11:45pm »

Sitting here in front of my computer thinking about why for 2 weeks in a row people have been arguing about stuff that shouldnt even have been brought up and I wonder why I race(kind of a random thought)haha......but anyways I am just another rider and im nobody special. I race the junior class and have never came in top 5.(yet)..lol...I have had parts break in the middle of a moto and rode across the finish line with no rear brakes(hawthorne)or with a jammed shift lever(winnemucca).....Ive gone home with nothing except pride knowing that I crossed the finish line safe for the last season and a half....knowing at the end of the day I have a little less money and didnt win anything..its hard sometimes...and I have been racing for just over a year now and it has been the Greatest time of my life......each sunday driving around to different tracks and seeing the same racers week after week and knowing that they love the sport that all of us love so much (motocross).....Ive seen people get hurt and things go wrong and all kind of things.....so I get to my point....Why do we race motocross? Well i know that I race motocross for the thrill , the passion, and for the love of the sport....knowing that the same racers will be there next sunday willing to help anyone that needs some help....we are the ohh-so-small motocross community!!!!!I dont understand why people have to argue...because we are all there for the same reason, because we love the sport and for the fun and if you win a trophy....hey thats just an extra bonus!!!!!!

Much thought,
Preston Joy #523

Very good question, Preston. I'm sure most of us will immediately answer with a "Because it's fun," but I think it's worth asking why it's fun.

I need to organize some of my reasons, but maybe in the meantime some of you will share your own. It's an interesting question.

I race because I enjoy CQB with my friends that I can trust to not ram me for a piece of plastic. One of my favorite people to race with is Rooster. We have awesome battles where we pass each other several times per lap. We change lines every lap, in every corner and we give enough room to be able to race. We never slam in the corners and we never take the other out. We push each other as hard as we can but we don't ride over our heads.
I don't care if I am in first or last. I just want to have fun with my friends. If it were not fun I would stay home and go ride my Redline.

I race because it allows me to share something with my son. More importantly he'll remember years from now all the quality time that we spent together traveling to races, seeing different places, and having fun together all the while win or lose.

Racing has been a phenomenal tool for JJ and school as well. He's learned over the years, that in order to race on Saturdays & Sundays, he has to perform in the classroom.

As for me, I've learned to become a better parent and not allow myself to get caught up in pushing my son, or yelling when he didn't finish first. But rather to give him a kiss before he leaves the gate, and to tell him that I love him. Lastly all the lasting friendships that we've made over the years with a lot of great people. To us you can't put a price on that!!

I race because of the sheer thrill and the adrenaline rush I get everytime I line up for a race. Its different from every other sport in that aspect because no other sport is as questionable or thrilling from the start all the way to the finish. Trophies are nice and I have to admit that I have had trouble in the past with getting mad at myself because I didn't race as well, but in the recent past I backed up and took a look at the most fun activity I have ever participated in in my life and, knowing full well that I am not going to make a career out of it, decided that thats all I need to do is just to race and have fun. After all, which is a more successful weekend, one where you get in the car with your dad all bummed because you didn't win or one in which you can talk about the race with them the whole way home because you had such a blast?

I use to think I raced only because of the rush but I was wrong. What I noticed when I left Nevada was how much more fun it was there vice Texas. The reason...... The freinds I had made at ALL ages. When I first got to Texas I felt I was lost and it was not as fun anymore. In the last year I have made quite a few friends here that share the same interest as mine. Motocross here is starting to become a blast again. Will never match Nevada. Nevada will always be a special place for me. My two favorite places to ride is Stead and Fernley. Ironically one is a track I ride the fastest and the other the slowest. That just proves to me more that it is more about freindship than anything else.

No Larry really is a sandbagger!
Everytime I got close to him at the Fern I would get hit with a big bag of sand. Finally I watched him the last time I got close and I could see him reaching down for something on his shoes. A second later I got his with a 5 lb bag of sand and off he went to the lead.

:-* Thank you Larry, I reallly enjoy our battles also. And you are right, we battle so well because we trust in each other not to do stupid moves and know it's all about the racing, not the winning. We could be mid pack and still have the best races of the day. At my age is really isn't about the winning or the trophies anymore, just the good times with friends and competitors. Not to say you young guys shouldn't be out there trying as hard as you can to win a trophy because you should, but it will always come down to being with your motocross family on weekends and enjoying the times with your immemdiate family bench racing about the day on the way home. Common ground, no matter what professional careers are involved, no matter age, no matter gender, just good times. As a senior stateman in N. Nv motocross I have had the best motocross family (everyone I ever met on a dirtbike), that any man could ever hope for. Friends, enemies, as/holes all alike, I love you all...........Rooster

THE DIRT BIKE RACE

We unhitch the trailer and unload the gear.
We’ve traveled so long, but we’re finally here.

We wait in the line, and my dad pays the fee.
I’m registered now with the head referee.

Now back to the trailer, it’s quite a long walk.
On the way I’m thinking much more than I talk.

I put on my helmet but can’t find my boots.
I think I look tough, but my mom says I’m cute.

I get on my bike, and I check out the gas.
Do I want a quick snack? No, I think I will pass.

The dirt on the track now, it seems kind of muddy.
I look just ahead, and I see my best buddy.

He’s riding quite slowly; he’s fast on some days.
He turns at the corner and catches my gaze.

My practice is done. I know what the tracks like.
I ride to the trailer and clean up my bike.

A long, boring time as I wait for my moto.
My mom finds the camera and takes a new photo.

It’s finally my turn, and I can’t quite sit still.
I’m nervous right now, and my stomach feels ill.

The starting line’s full, and I’m ready to race.
My goggles are fogged from the sweat on my face.

Just now the gate drops, and I follow my plan.
I fly to the corner as fast as I can.

A few laps go by, and I’m moving up fast.
This race is so fun, I am having a blast.

In the turn he’s outside; I can see it from here.
So I turn my wheel inside and hear the crowd cheer.

And now I’m in first! I am very delighted.
I hope I don’t crash now. Oh man, I’m excited.

I glide through the air as I clear the long jump.
I slide through the corner, avoiding the bump.

The last lap is here; I am getting so tired.
My buddy’s behind me, the one I admire.

We’re now side by side with the finish line near.
I make a mistake, not a crash, but severe.

He gets the flag first so I get second place.
I high-five his hand, with a smile on my face.

He’s too fast today, and I just can’t beat him.
I think I can win, the next time that I meet him.

We’re driving toward home, and I don’t want to speak.
I’m imagining crossing the line first next week.

Wow, that's pretty good! I don't race yet, but I'd say it seems to be right on!
