Thinking of Steve's #98 reminded me of numbers in general--and why we run the ones we do.
My own number saga began when I was given a choice between #10 and #16 as a 50cc pilot at Barona Oaks Raceway in Ramona, California. I chose #16 (not sure why now--it was 17 years ago.) In my salad days as a 125cc Junior, I went to #116 to lessen the chance of having to run a letter. Then, after not turning in my 250cc Pro license application soon enough one year, our own Kim informed me that #116 was taken. After searching vainly for whoever stole my trademark, I found the closest variant on my #16 theme was #716. I ran it.
Still awake? Awesome. Maybe you'd like to share your own number rationale...

ZZZzzzzz! Just kidding. My first number was 87 just because I was going to graduate that year from high school. Since returning to the sport in 01' I ran #299 the longest but someone grabbed it when we moved away for two years. I miss that #. I ran 517 in North Dakota because it is my b-day. I went with #414 (Carmicheal/Windham) on my MX West license when we came back but ran just 14 on my bike for a year. There were to many 14 so I put on 414. Then Mark had to point out that in his mind I was half of him (#818) That had to be changed! So I think I'll stick with #98 now for awhile. I just like the way it looks.

My boys started racing this year and when it was time to pick a number we thought a long time. My son Colton picked 56A because that was his uncle Al McElroy's when he raced. My son Cooper picked 55H because that number was Jay Heying's one of the coolist guys ever. Its funny how we all relate a number on a bike to someone or something.

I got 63s when I joined the Sierra chapter of the OTHG in 1999. They assigned it to me. I took 63r when I quit the Sierra chapter and joined the Reno chapter. Before that I ran 27x when I was a member of the Polka Dots MC. (1980-1999) My son Jesse took 22 because that was his Grandpa's number when he raced pro. (late 60s-early 70s)

last year i ran 239 because it was my birthday 2-3-90 but at the end of the year i found an old photo album of my dad when he was my age and it had a picture of him riding his honda cr 125 from the first year they were made with the number 27 so i decided that was the number i wanted to run.

282 was the first number i've run I originally wanted 88 but it was taken mostly because my lucky number has always been 8 due to my b-day 8-8-90. i think some time in the next year i will switch to 88.

Just for fun, a quick bit of numbers trivia: who has made the biggest jump in AMA Pro Racing number status in one year? (i.e., ran a very high number one year and a very low number the next.)
This question is hardly relevant anymore since the AMA has gone to their permanent numbering system. I still miss the old earn-as-you-go system. Keep those number stories coming too.

Chris Gosselaar went from #955 in 1998 to #68 in 1999... I thought you had it when I first heard this one, but I thought of a still bigger jump a few minutes ago. It happened a few years earlier...
