Kelly,
We have such an organization. It is called "Sierra Motocross Racing Association". We have by laws that address these points you mentioned and every meeting is opened to anybody who wishes to express their views! The funny thing is that we have had virtually no attendance at these meetings from other than the promoters and the board.
The Old Timers put out a survey on the practice schedule to solicit feedback at their Spring Series event and we got virtually ZERO feedback or suggestions.
This organization was started by honorable people who have the racers in mind and want the input. The organizational heirachy and by-laws were well thought out to avoid the perceived pitfalls of the organization that we were moving away from, again out of frustration with the status quo. Please come to our meetings and give us your thoughts and suggestions for action. We are concerned about racing in this area and are actually DOING something about it. Believe me it is easy to sit on my sofa here and type all the banter I want but what really makes a difference is volunteering my time to go to the meetings and work on the schedule and enforce the by-laws. I wish more people with positive ideas would step forward and attend our meetings and see how working with the promoters is very challenging to get them to reach agreement on anything. Much of what has been suggested in the last couple posts is spot on and has already been done or is in place.
We do have annual elections and ANYONE can be nominated for office that is 18 or older and is a member of the organization. Should you or anyone be interested PLEASE get involved! I offered to help get things going, never intending to become the president, but there were not alot of volunteers for this unenviable job. I am glad I stepped up to help and now have a much better appreciation for the complexity of coordinating and pleasing everyone. I don't think I am the best suited for this job and some promoters do not like me very much because I place great weight on honor and integrety and some have a problem with this. I will not point fingers but if anyone wants to see true colors please feel free to attend our monthly meetings and listen in and/or contibute. We meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month at Roundtable Pizza between 4th and 5th Streets and Vine. You will certainly be rewarded with a realistic and enlightening view of what is going on and the efforts put into improving racing in our area without allowing any one or two promoters to dominate the playing field.
To date I have not seen any MXWEST board members at one of our meetings but I would like to. I agree we need to get together for the good of all. I have had good conversation with Mark Cody and explained to him that just putting together our Summer series dates with eight venues was very difficult and took until the last possible day to get agreement and final dates from all promoters involved that there was absolutely no time left to try to work around MXWest dates. There was no malice intended we just did not have time to do any more. Recall the flyers did not get mailed out until just a week prior to first event and from the time the schedule was finalized at our last meeting in May to the time it was put in the mail was a short time. You will notice that the Summer schedule does not include the OTMX club because they were kind enough to forfeit their date which would have been the last race of the series in favor of Honeylake, because Honeylake wanted to have a BBQ party and do the Summer Series awards Saturday evening. I think they even plan on having a band and there is a nonsanctioned GP style race the Sunday following for an added bonus. My hat goes off to the Ole Timers and Larry Brown for doing this even though it doesn't feel right not having them in the series. These non profit clubs do not deserve some of the negative comments I have seen. They do a great job with only volunteer help and I know personally that some like the OTMX and OTHG club donate money to the lion's club and to scholorship funds for some of our local racers to go to college. All their members pay an annual fee which goes toward paying for race expenses and year end awards and a party for their members. How can you fault this? I can promise you they are not making money and doing dishonorable things with it.
It will take more than one meeting to solve all the issues at hand but if we all work in a positive direction and stop the negativity we can make it better!
