Go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Inflation Calculator.
My dad bought be a brand new '97 CR 80 for $2700 out the door from Michael's Carson
In 2014, that amount inflates to $3918. A brand new CRF 150 costs $4990. That $1000 difference today equates to $700 in 1997. Would my dad have bought me a brand new 97 CR 80 for $3400 instead of $2700?
The answer is NO. It sounds like a small amount - but that $700 would have changed a lot. We make less money in 2014. How are we supposed to make up the difference - especially considering since 1997, we have invented $100 per month cell phone bills and the amazingness that is Direct TV? We can't.

I will say you guys are lucky. You don't know what you have till it's gone. Here in Alaska we have 3 tracks. And none of them are special at all. Actually borderline junk. We have to pay $175 for a membership that is only good for 4 1/2 many 5 months of racing.(12 race city and 11 race state series) One track is 8hrs away, another 4 hrs and there is one here in Anchorage. At $3.50+ a gallon of gas traveling is obviously expensive. Parts up here are crazy expensive too. Since I do race the Pro class they charge us $50 a class. We don't get groomed and watered practices here in Anchorage either. Catching my drift. Yeah it sucks here. Now onto the other. I myself am more of a true mx track rider. At my age and the responsibilities I have now hitting big doubles are not my thing. I avoid those tracks and will not race there. Racing on tracks like that is a waste of money to me because of such obstacles. Plain and simple I am not competitive and could probably get smoked by a C class rider. Not sure if that is a problem there or not. Just my two cents. Take it for what it's worth. Miss everyone and I cannot wait to move back.

This was the point I was trying to make earlier, I didnt mean the tracks are not safe, they are just not safe for me. I and im sure there are others who feel the same, they just dont want to say anything, believe me I here it from alot of older riders out there. I dont want to enter in a race that I can not safely run, I dont want to be in the way of others either. Im not knocking the tracks, just that more of the older generation would be more inclined to partake in the sport if it was something they felt more confident in. I dont know what the answer is here, but there is always a solution. Injuries are just part of this sport, but its tough when you need to be at work on Monday to support the family.

This has been a good post and there have been some good comments all around. Shows that many people care and want to participate, which in my mind is a great thing and bodes well for the sport up here. First of all we are still in tough economic times and most lower ranked, no matter if its local MX or oval track racing, has been affected as many of those that participate are basically blue collar workers. And that segment has been hit hard. I am encouraged as I've been seeing bigger turn outs at the races I can get to. And the Pee Wee classes, which are the future, seem well filled although there is always room for more riders. Livfast had some great comments but what remains of the big split years ago is still plaguing our local motocross community. I too would like to see a unified series in the spring and fall into winter but what I'm seeing are shorter series. While I know that there is still some remaining bad feelings over the split that occurred years ago I feel it's time for the MX community to come together for the good of the sport. The current situation can be turned around and once again we can have good rider counts at all the events. But it will take work, cooperation and people keeping their eye on the goal; the sport itself. I wish you all the best and will see you in early March. It's great to be around racing again as my year begins with motorcycles and ends with motorcycles. Take care and see you at the track.
