Games gold medalist Travis Pastrana spent his day flying over Manhattan on his Cernic's Suzuki RM-250 at the request of talk show host David Letterman.
Pastrana is the lead guest on tonight's telecast of the "Late Show With David Letterman," which taped earlier Monday in New York.
Pastrana started out with a "Kiss of Death," nailing the stunt for the national television audience and the crowds lining the end of 53rd Street near Broadway. He followed that with a backflip, also done to perfection, then ran inside the Ed Sullivan Theatre to chat with Letterman.
Heavy early morning rains had put the appearance in doubt. Tons of wet dirt were delivered to 53rd St. next to the theatre and Pastrana's crew groomed it as best they could into a landing ramp. Once the ramp and landing area were prepared, Pastrana made nine practice jumps, starting with a routine ramp to dirt jump, then quickly breaking out his arsenal of tricks.
The Letterman appearance comes a day after Pastrana, along with co-driver Christian Edstrom, won his first Rally American National Championship event. Driving his 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Pastrana and Edstrom dominated the Ojibwe Forests Rally near Bemidji, Minnesota. The team led from early on and went on to win the two-day event by over a minute.
