I suspect the decline of the local race scene in recent years is a factor in the low turnouts in the pro class today. That may seem like an obvious statement, but what I mean is that riders have always cycled through the pro class over the years -- it's hard to ride at that level season after season -- but there appear to be fewer and fewer riders arriving to replace the guys who have stopped over the last few years. Today's 65cc and 85cc racers are tomorrow's pros. If there are fewer kids racing those classes at a given time, it will spell trouble for the more advanced classes in a few years. Look at it this way: - For every 30 young racers at the track today, maybe one will make it to the pro class (a very liberal estimate -- the actual number of eventual pros is probably much lower).
- Thus if there are 300 young racers active in local racing at a given time, 10 or so may become local pros someday.
- But if racing shrinks to the point where there are only 150 young riders in the pool in a particular generation, you're only looking at four or five eventual pros coming from that generation.
- When the numbers dwindle to that point, half of those pros may not even find it worth the effort to race.
I think this is one explanation for why the upper classes have been hit especially hard by the decline in turnouts. You need big beginner and junior classes to create tomorrow's pros, and if those classes don't get the turnouts over time, we may be bound to see fewer and fewer pros as time goes on.

race or no race, we are still smack talking on mx775. . nice to see you join the party beaupre. your 480 is a factory edition...totally cheating. same with gillen and his bored out YZ378 or whatever cheater kit is in that thing. and now theres rumor Bissell is goin back to 4stroke ? nooooo ! hansens november race last year was a blast. hope it isn't true Fine, I'll run the YZ. The roost from the newly rebuilt 480 may have seriously injured someone anyway. I may need to train at your spot though. The YZ is at NMS now, getting all the dents in its pipe blown out. Turns out there are a few rocks in my neighborhood. Is Aaron really going back to a four-stroke? Our old-school race won't be nearly as core with a thumper in the mix ... unless it's one of these.

Sorry to hear it, Judy. These are tough days to put on motorcycle races. I hope the winter bring changes too. Thanks for the update.

Race a motorcycle? I thought those things were just for popping wheelies and looking shiny in the garage.
Plus I'd be nervous to race Mudd and Gillen. They have more recent two-stroke experience than I do. Maybe I'd do it if they let me race my 480.

We're still awaiting details on that one, Mike, but last I heard there may be an event this fall.

It is hard to see the challenges involved in putting on races until you try to take part in the organizing. I hope everyone who wants better for the sport in our area considers getting involved.

Not sure about the deleted posts, but feel free to let me know if you spot any others. It is entirely possible the users took them down themselves (it happens).

Max, I was doing some spring cleaning of the sticky threads this morning and I took them all down, but only because they were all over -- the lone exception being the SMRA Spring Series, which I mistakenly thought was over (forgot about the rescheduled round). It's back up now though! Sorry for the oversight.

Also, the last Stead race has been replaced with a June 6-7-8 race event at Fernley. Look for more details here as this race gets closer.

Interesting numbers. RV's earnings are definitely decent, but it's a shame the riders don't get more given the risks and dedication involved in being a contender today.
