I have a 2001 RM250, bought it as bits and pieces basically and got the little SOB running. Prob is it runs and rides for about 15 min then dies. Cools down and BAM you get another 15 min of play time. I decided I would troublshoot...by replacing the coil first (I remember similar problems from years past being related to the coil). Anywho I went out and bought myself a brand new aftermarket coil...Weird thing is this new coil comes with one wire while the factory unit has 2 with a nice waterproof connector. She shoot howdy this is confusing as all hell cuz I CANNOT find an aftermarket coil for this bike with the correct amount of wires! Now I know I can get this coil to work with the amount of wires provided however I was wondering if anyone here knows if this is typical or what the heck is going on? Sure would hate to clip/modify some wires if this is not typical.

Have you tried an OEM coil or are they crazy expensive?

Wes, one is probably a ground, unless it has a connector on it. If it has an eyelet on it, i would say it screws too the frame or mounting bracket. Git that son b**** going so we can start riding together again!

True that! But we won't get into the leaf checking stage during this topic. That's a whole other ball of wax. Hehe!

Spend the money having a shop with the correct equipment figure out the issue. Coils have values and with a test you wouldn't be trying to fit this coil.

OEM coils are crazy more than I'm willing to pay lol. Spanker I know the wire type you're talking about. This ain't like your typical setup, has a nice two prong connector to it. No doubt one is still some kind of ground though... PS I checked for leaves, we're clear Layne idk what your experience is with coils but back in my 80/125 two stroke days I had a few coils go bad. Maybe I just got the lemons lol. Appreciate the advice but no need for a shop. Been working on these all my life.

No worries Wes... I spend 20yrs working at a shop and a few things I know. 1. Dont try and fix your bike by throwing parts at it (using your wallet to diagnose the problem) 2. For what you spend on a coil you could've bought a OHM meter and tested all the parts. 3. Most shops would've checked your coil for free. One could guess what the problem is but with testing there would be no guessing Now get that roach fixed so you can come moto!

I hear ya layne, I'm not just throwing $$ at it. Tested the coil with the multimeter I own coil was bad, but the gas cap was also bad, someone stuck a piece of wood in it hahaha who does that? Always appreciate the advice
