Yesterday marked the six-year anniversary of a crash I had that resulted in nine broken bones and a collapsed lung. I wrote about this crash on this site, lamenting that it probably meant the end of my 22-year run as a racer. Six years later, I still haven't returned to racing motocross, and I am mostly OK with that. Today I still ride my dirt bike regularly, and the absence of racing has allowed me to enjoy riding on a different level. I have more fun when I'm riding now. I'm free from the pressure of practicing starts, building endurance and pushing past my comfort zone on long, whooped-out straights and sketchy, rut-filled jumps. It's nice. But there's still a part of me that sees photos or results from the races and wishes I was out there. Racing is a hard habit to kick, and if I hadn't adopted downhill mountain bike racing -- for me, the methadone to the heroin of motocross -- I might struggle with my lack of motocross racing a lot more. Yet I also know that I'm not the only one who's turned away from motocross racing in recent years. The race turnouts are much thinner than they were a decade ago -- in northern Nevada as well as much of the rest of the nation -- and while many of the racers who've left have done so because of injuries (like me), I don't think all of them have left for that reason. I think many of them have left because of economics, thin competition, new responsibilities or plain old loss of interest. So the question this week is: If you've not raced many motocross races lately, what's kept you away? You can let us know via this poll. Please feel free to elaborate on your answer below too. Thanks! racing.... motocross has changed and we (the sport of) have created a breed of professional practicers, not racers. Most spend more time practicing and talking about racing than really doing the act of it. In the 90's the breed was all about contingency money, a breed of lifelong junior class racers all seeking that all mighty dollar. It wasn't about the race it was about the ability to brag about the cash they had won from factories. But back then to practice meant dry dusty days out at some ungroomed track with some natural terrain jumps. ... Now are riders we have the ability to ride pretty much every day of the week on a groomed track, with jumps and obstacles that could and would be faced on a normal race day. We have friends that bring cameras out, we all blast turns try and throw big whips all for a the op of getting a good shot of us looking good. Then there is the video ops for making that mighty clip that will be on Facebook or Instagram. Believe me I don't find fault in any of this, because I love a good picture or video of myself riding and we have some guys/gals that have some serious skills visit our tracks taking those pics and making videos. Riders of today have goals of racing and winning amateur nationals all with just the act of practicing never doing the act of racing...The focus of racing locally and growing from there has gotten lost, without racing locally on a consistent bases the chance of being a good racer lessens. To be good at something you must do it, not just practice that act of it. At no giving point can one practice the act of racing without doing it. Practicing is to hone your skills of riding, gaining that feel of the bike and how it reacts. Learning ways of bettering your cornering, mastering ruts ect.. But in saying all that there is no replacement for lining up on a starting gate and racing. The more you race the better you become in doing so. But somehow that has gotten lost..which is sad... But I believe it will come back... it's all full circle. This is the first year that I have ever seen races/ series canceled due to lack of rider turn out. Being a promoter you throw your nuts out on the line every time in hopes of getting a solid turn out to cover all your bills, it's scary! And it becomes that question, how many times to you want to gamble that and or is it worth that? It surely didn't help that our local sanctioning body didn't put anything out for a fall series. There is a lot of uncertainty in the air, and I hope with winter passing things will change for the 2015 season. I don't think it is....Tracks, the layout of the tracks with in our area are good for all levels. With little or zero punishment for jumping or not jumping. I grew up racing jumping doubles...rhythm sections...tabletops ect. Bikes all had plenty of suspension, disc brakes and plenty of power. The time of obstacles being out of control have passed. The motorcycles have become so good in stock form it's scary. The tracks are as fast as your ability can make them, Exit28 for example has two very long straight aways. It becomes how fast can you exit the turn and grab gears and brake into the next turn. Not everybody will have that to grab fourth or fifth gear but that's not the track, it's their riding ability....

Feld Motor Sports® and FOX Sports announced today the 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, television schedule that includes 17 live races, headlined by the first-ever live FOX network broadcast from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Saturday, April 25. The 2015 Monster Energy Supercross season opens Saturday, Jan. 3, in Anaheim, Calif., with the first of 12 live races on FOX Sports 1. Three races currently are scheduled to air live on FOX Sports 2, with all races available live through the FOX Sports GO app, which will provide live streaming of every Monster Energy Supercross race. “The 2015 Monster Energy Supercross television package on FOX Sports is a testament to the network’s strengthening commitment to help grow the Monster Energy Supercross brand,” said Ken Hudgens, COO, Feld Motor Sports. “The 2015 television package is the strongest ever and signifies a major milestone with the first ever live airing on FOX Broadcast Network. The riders, teams, manufacturers, sponsors, and entire sport will be elevated by the live network broadcast on FOX. This is a major announcement that is great for everyone involved, including the broad viewing audience.” A key change to the races in 2015 will be the start time for all races (except East Rutherford). Each race will start 30 minutes earlier, at 7:00pm local race time, with the afternoon pit parties also starting 30 minutes earlier at Noon local race time. This is a better race time, and television time, for Monster Energy Supercross fans, including those on the east coast. Monster Energy Supercross’ international television footprint, which reached over 100 countries in 2014, will be announced soon and will once again include live television in Australia, among others. All in, there has never been more live television, more viewers, or more global broadcast hours for Monster Energy Supercross. “Monster Energy Supercross offers some of the most intense on-track action in all of motor sports and we believe we have put together a very strong television package for 2015,” said Patrick Crakes, FOX Sports SVP of Programming, Scheduling and Content Strategy. The FOX Sports broadcast team of Ralph Sheheen, Jeff Emig and Jenny Taft returns in 2015, with guest analyst appearances from five-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael. Additional television announcements surrounding the 2015 Monster Energy Supercross seasons will be coming shortly. 2015 Monster Energy Supercross television schedule (all times ET and subject to change): 2015 sx tv schedule.docx (12.07 KB)

No worries Wes... I spend 20yrs working at a shop and a few things I know. 1. Dont try and fix your bike by throwing parts at it (using your wallet to diagnose the problem) 2. For what you spend on a coil you could've bought a OHM meter and tested all the parts. 3. Most shops would've checked your coil for free. One could guess what the problem is but with testing there would be no guessing Now get that roach fixed so you can come moto!

I have a 2001 RM250, bought it as bits and pieces basically and got the little SOB running. Prob is it runs and rides for about 15 min then dies. Cools down and BAM you get another 15 min of play time. I decided I would troublshoot...by replacing the coil first (I remember similar problems from years past being related to the coil). Anywho I went out and bought myself a brand new aftermarket coil...Weird thing is this new coil comes with one wire while the factory unit has 2 with a nice waterproof connector. She shoot howdy this is confusing as all hell cuz I CANNOT find an aftermarket coil for this bike with the correct amount of wires! Now I know I can get this coil to work with the amount of wires provided however I was wondering if anyone here knows if this is typical or what the heck is going on? Sure would hate to clip/modify some wires if this is not typical. Wes, Very rarely does a coil go bad. Don't use your wallet to diagnose your bikes problem! Especially electrical issues... Spend the money having a shop with the correct equipment figure out the issue. Coils have values and with a test you wouldn't be trying to fit this coil.

back on August 18th, I sent a email out to a collective group of people to a series started for the fall. The meeting was August 26th 2014. The goal was simple to get a fall series going, with SMRA letting all of us know very suddenly that they were not putting together a fall series left many scratching our head and wanting to race and there was no other offers on the table so something needed to happen. I hear it every day in my travels, people wanna race... they want a series. I believe collectively with the group that I'd selected we'd be able to move forward and make it happen. The first meeting was smooth as butter, we reached out to all tracks/clubs/promoters, getting as many involved as possible. Like I said the plan was to get something together and make it happen fast. We talked about rules we planned on using and options, dates, structure, working together, be consistent, work on being more progressive, banquet and who was going to do what. Everything that was on the agenda was voted on collectively by the group that was involved. This was ALL this was about was having a series for the racers.... no more, no less!
We'd all meet again in few weeks later and get it ready to announce the series.
Round 2, meeting.... We got together to finalize everything which isn't that easy with life getting in the way of motocross. The showing was a bit down but still was good. There were a few concerns from one track and which we address, all seemed to be good. The next step was the flyer, and was getting worked on.... then bam! One track backed out and left us in a stoop. Time was working against us at this point and with some of the last few races having a poor turnout it left a lot of doubt. I had a plan B and it seemed to be what we were going forward with..but.... well, I was in doubt now too. The OTHG was going to forge ahead. It seemed like each day presented a new hurdle for this series and the OTHG to put the kick off race on. The final blow was not being able to conformation on getting the equipment for the event. (the construction world is pinned!)
Things I learned from this... I'm somewhat shocked in this day and age how few respond to emails. People want things to happen, they want to race their motorcycles. But, yet I'm surprised on the amount of doubt and concern of others. Lastly, you can fill a room full of people no matter what has happened in the past or present, put a common goal in front of them with direction and things happen in a positive manor.
Lastly... this Spring is going to be a great time for Northern Nevada racing! And the OTHG will be doing something in October. We can't let Fall just slip away without some moto out at the Fern.
Thank you all for the support! Layne OTHG Pres

Yes because Tim has always supported the other series, and all the mx tracks here, he's never said one bad thing about them, and never starts any issues. Like I said as a racer, I want them all to work.... Sounds like you should let it go and just race. Stir up s*** doesnt do any of us any good that wanna race

You just missed two days of it last weekend... Club MX775 had a Friday, Saturday practice and Sunday was race day. I think they have something planned for early July.

Yeah I know MX775 gave out the tickets. But to hype up an event like Tim did, to only cancel the remaining rounds is pretty sad (If the rumors are true). I think a lot of people would have rather raced Stead than 28. Stead always has a big turn out. Will the 5 classes (the only ones eligible) still get the Monster Cup tickets to meet RCH??? Looks like its on... why would you ever want a race series to fail? I know as a racer, I want them all to work out.

You have Mammoth Mountain MX happening for about 2 weeks in the middle to end of June. Which consumes most of the local rider base.... So not much happens other than that in June. I know in July Exit28 has night races starting up.
