Great poster photo. Wish I could have been there. That track was my journalistic basic training and I covered a lot of motorcross and oval track racing there. Still miss those late night rides back home when the full moon was shining. Used to come back via Eastlake and just enjoy the scenery.

Dakota: What you've touched on is something that any journalist faces, the need to inform. I'd still like to find out how he's doing but if you notice in my race reports I do not mention a rider's name. When Amanda was hurt I never mentioned her name until I first spoke with her father. Still, if you are at a public sporting event, well you're exposed and if anything happens you can be mentioned. Due to the Hippa law, another cluster our Congress passed without thinking, I have stopped mentioning names and only ask the medics if they had anybody transported or if someone is taking themselves to the hospital. That keeps me from getting them in trouble. I think the insurance problem needs to be addressed. When I cover an IKF race, my signing in puts my under their insurance umbrella. At every race I usually sign a release and you should read the ones we sign at professional races. It might be time for the AMA or some body to step up and offer insurance at events that competitors can get for a modest cost. I know one local driver, he races a pro stock, that anted up the expense of getting insurance so if he's hurt his family won't be. I think riders might want to think this out and if someone is in the insurance business they might want to look into this. And I'd still like to know Newman's condition. See you at the races.

Will someone please give me an update on Roger's condition. I'll include it in my racing report for Monday's Daily Sparks Tribune. Thanks.

My congrats to the hard working mom and a very tired dad. Two girls huh, Robert you're in for quite a ride with both of them having you wrapped around their little fingers. Good for you and my best wishes to a fellow Cycle News contributor. Take care buddy and see you at the races.

Thanks Bob! Sadly I have to work a show this evening so, for me, the big present will be the race at Fallon on Sunday.

For you that ride in the Red Rock area, north of Reno and west of Stead, you might be interested in an alert a myspace friend sent me. Sounds like another land grab by a developer. Here it is:
Please take action on this and repost! Thanks! - Heather
EVANS RANCH ALERT FOR UNINCORPORATED AND INCORPORATED RESIDENTS:
Please go here to download information on the initiative petitions: http://planevada. org/content/blogcategory/75/446/
We wanted to alert you to concerns about the environmental and recreational impacts of the proposed Evans Ranch development on Reno residents who care about wildlife, public lands, outdoor recreation, and the environmental impacts of sprawl. Evans Ranch is a huge development of 5,556 homes that has been proposed for the area between Red Rock Road and Petersen Mountain, which is currently only zoned for 40 homes. See the attached "Notice of Public Hearing.
"
If approved by City Council, this high-density development will have many negative effects on our community:
* The Evans Ranch property borders BLM on the west, and is near the beautiful Petersen Mountain Natural Area. If built as planned, the project will negatively impact wildlife, including the local herd of pronghorn and the Washoe-Lassen mule deer herd that winters there and uses a critical spring that is part of the property. Although the City’s proposal acknowledges the likely negative effects on wildlife, the proposal for Evans Ranch does not include a specific plan for how these negative impacts will be reduced. And when 15,000 people are added to this remote valley, all the nearby public lands which are so great for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and other responsible recreational usage will suffer immensely.
* The density of the proposed Evans Ranch development will change our quality of life forever. The development will have a major impact not only on recreational opportunities and on wildlife, but will produce 1.6 million gallons of sewage per day, will use more than 625 acre feet of water per year, and will add to light pollution. Although Evans Ranch is so large as to be a project of “Regional Significance,” the proposal includes no construction management plan, no adequate traffic study, no specific plan for where the water will come from or even where the effluent water will be pumped out to.
* In the form it is proposed, Evans Ranch is an example of the sort of unchecked growth and urban sprawl that threatens to ruin our way of life in the Truckee Meadows. It does not depend on principles of contiguous urban planning, instead leapfrogging open land to put dense urban developments in rural areas. It increases not only the volume of traffic but the distance it travels, and does so without adequate plans for the expansion of infrastructure.
It is made possible only by unsustainable water importation schemes that ignore the environmental realities of local aquifers and watersheds as real limits on growth in the Reno area
WHAT YOU CAN DO: PLEASE take a moment to tell the Reno City Council that you are concerned about the impact of Evans Ranch, and that you oppose the plan. If you would like to attend the hearing at which this will be decided, please join us at City Hall, 1. East 1st Street, at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9. Or, you can email Lynnette Jones, Reno City Clerk, at jonesl@ci.reno.nv.us or send a letter to the City Clerk at PO Box 7, Reno, NV 89504. PLEASE SEND YOUR EMAILS AND LETTERS BY FRIDAY, APRIL 4! Your note to City Council can be very short, and can just say that you have concerns and so you oppose the Evans Ranch proposal.
TIME IS VERY SHORT! PLEASE HELP PROTECT WILDLIFE, OPEN SPACE, AND WATER RESOURCES BY ATTENDING THE HEARING ON APRIL 9 AT 6:00 P.M. OR BY WRITING TO THE RENO CITY COUNCIL TO OPPOSE EVANS RANCH.

The Hungry Valley OHV area extends from Lemmon Valley, you can get to it by taking Lemmon Valley Drive and turning east where the road swings from the front to the back of the valley or you can get to it by going out the the Moon Rocks area. For more specific instructions contact Dave - he's also sponsoring the ride day that Sunday at Mustang - at Dirty Dave's Cycle Shop in Reno.

Hi Folks: As you in Reno know, those that ride motorcycles have been getting hit hard with regards to the Hungry Valley OHV area. Seems they've been blamed for all the trash that is being dumped out there. Well there is a way you can help. On April 19-20 there will be a clean up and several organizations are helping including clubs from MRANN. There will be a camp out on Saturday night. So, if you would like to help Mother Earth, on her weekend, anyone interested can help with the clean up on Saturday, maybe camp out, then head for the MX 775 ride day at Mustang on Sunday. Anyway, here is a chance to help repair the false image that many are getting with regards to the dumping that is present in the area. Hope to see you there. A good contact is Dave at Dirty Dave's Cycle Shop in Reno.

So where does one find out about when the Supermoto racers will be at Fernley. I actually boycotted both their visits to Reno as they never told anybody, in the press that is, that they were coming. The RGJ did something that first race. Their reporter, who knows nothing about racing, got the assignment Friday and I was told had most of his article talking to spectators. Don't think he knew the difference between knobby tires and a Jeff Ward. Don't know whose fault it was for the bad PR effort but it can't ever help a series that visits a new town.

I have a brother that has a PhD but who lives in Ohio. When he and his wife decided to home school their three kids they ran into a wall. Since they lived in Toledo the fix was to simply move a few miles north to Michigan. Anybody want to bet that more than a few Californians will move to our side of the border. One should also keep in mind that every school in a formal class room earns money for that particular school district. Losing them to home schooling is a loss or revenue. I'm sure those that have racer kids might consider either a private school - if the public ones have strict attendance standards - or move somewhere else.

A little reminder for those racing at Stead on Sunday - Daylight Savings Time begins on that very day. Those rascals in Congress decided we needed to set out clocks a bit earlier so remember to set your clocks forward an hour sometime Saturday evening. Weather should be good and look forward to seeing everyone there.

Most people know Tommy Jean and his sister Normajean. Well their father is pretty sick with lung cancer and will face an operation on Wednesday, Feb. 13, as the first part of his treatment. Norma sent me this information and said the operation will be at Saint Mary's. Tom should be there for a few days after surgery and then find out what the doctors have planned for him. If you can, let him and the family know your thoughts and prayers are with him and during this time. I know good words coming from the motocross family will really boost his spirits.

Hi Folks: The paper now has a new website and my racing articles will be found, as usual, in the Monday sports section. Now we can add other sports so it looks more like a normal newspaper page except that this week's has a huge photo! That new site is: www.dailysparkstribune.com. See you at the races! Dan McGee

It was my understanding that the schedules for both Silver Peak and Sierra are going to be published this weekend. If so, will they be in the calendar? Thanks
